Over time, the steel shell would become compressed by the seal adapter due to the different expansion/contraction rates of the two parts. The original crank seal had a steel outer shell which was pressed into the aluminum seal adapter. The 1989 model year was the first year Dodge installed the Cummins 6BT Diesel engine in Ram trucks. The Seal Retainer is gasketed to both the back of the block and the top of the oil pan, so unless you REALLY have to remove adapter DON'T! The rear seal adapter does not have dowel pins to center it to the crankshaft, so you use the steel ring to keep the adapter centered on the crank as you tighten the adapter bolts. It is only used if to center the seal adapter to the crank for some reason you removed the aluminum rear seal adapter housing from the back of the Cummins block (removing the adapter is not necessary to replace the seal). The steel ring included with QU10556 is not a seal installer. Once the Seal is slid over the Starter and onto the crank, remove and discard the Seal Starter. The Seal Starter is flared slightly to fit over the end of the crank. On QU10556, the thin plastic disposable Seal Starter is pre-installed in the Seal. Need More Info?
